General Information
Qatar is located in the middle of the western coast of the Gulf forming a peninsula with islands and reefs. The jutting peninsula of Gulf is an oil-rich country totalling around 11532 square kilometres. The peninsula is 160 kilometres by length and 80 kilometres by width. Qatar is neighbouring to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates. It has a beautiful coastline more than 700kms. Population of Qatar is 600,000. Official language – Arabic. Religion – Islam. Law – based on Shariat Law with both Civil and Shariat Courts. Al Thani family rules the country. Emir of the State of Qatar (hereditary monarchy) – His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Doha
Doha, the biggest commercial centre, is the capital of the country and home for 80% of the country’s population. Doha is the surroundings of the best corniche of the region located half way down the east coast of the peninsula. It has a nice mixture of Oriental, Arabic and Modern buildings. Doha is rich enough with Museums, traditional and modern markets / malls, fine mosques etc. Doha is well connected by air, sea and satellite with the rest of the world.
Al Shahania – Al Rayan
The central area of Qatar with palaces and fine buildings. Al Shahania the house of camels have many camel farm generally owned by rich Qatari’s. Al Rayan has one of the best horseracing course with millions worth Horses in its stable.
North Qatar
Most of the historical and archaeological sites located in the North Qatar. Umm Salal Mohammed, a ruins of a 19th Century Fort, Qalit Marir Fortress (Al Zubara) are just some of those. A natural harbour made Al Khor the second biggest city of Qatar.
West Coast
The richest region of Qatar by Gas is also very beautiful with Palm Tree Beach. Dukhan region has it major gas / oil fields. Salwa, the border city to Saudi Arabia, is very close to Dukhan.
Khor Al Odeid
South Qatar is the major tourist attraction of the county. This region has the marvellous land scape with 50 m high sand dunes surrounded by shallow sea, thus sand skiing can be coupled with water skiing in this area. These dunes are the most exotic and virgin dunes in this region open for desert safari. You can sea Saudi Arabian mountains just across the inland sea.
Culture and History
Qatar echoing the values of their tradition even during the adoption of the modern cosmopolitan style of living. Qatar traditions are blended and rooted through the thriving pearl hunting and Islamic culture. Civilization of Qatar goes back to 2500 BC, pottery dating this era was found in more than one location. The Greek historian Herodotus (484-424 BC) referred in his works to the original seafaring inhabitants of Qatar. The geographer Ptolemy (2nd century AD) showed the word “Catara” on his map. You can experience the rich history of this Land in various museums all over the country.
